How to use
- 01
Measure the rail width and the finished curtain drop, rather than the size of the window glass.
- 02
Choose fullness, usable fabric width and allowances. Side allowance is reserved on each edge of every full-width drop.
- 03
Read the whole-drop count and total fabric length. Add shrinkage and pattern-repeat allowance separately before shopping.
The calculation
Usable width = fabric width − 2 × side allowance. Drops = round up (rail width × fullness ÷ usable width). Cut length = finished drop + top + bottom allowances. Total fabric = drops × cut length.
A 180 cm rail with 2× fullness needs 360 cm of flat curtain width. With 140 cm fabric and 2 cm per side, each drop contributes 136 cm; round 360 ÷ 136 up to 3 drops. A 220 cm drop plus 10 cm top and 15 cm bottom needs 245 cm per drop: 7.35 m total.
Before you buy
Side allowance is conservatively applied to every edge, including joining edges. This estimates the total cloth for the entire rail; it does not divide drops into left and right panels or calculate heading tape, lining, hardware or pattern matching.
